Description

Primary Objective:

The Head of Strategy & Special Projects is a leadership position within the Group Strategy team. This position reports to the Head of Group Strategy and manages a team of project leaders and junior analysts. Key objectives of the role include:

  • Supporting in the definition of the long-term strategy and future direction for the Group
  • Developing and implementing strategic initiatives across the Group, in collaboration with other departments in the Group
  • Acting as a strategic thought partner / internal strategy consultant to senior Group stakeholders on ad-hoc key business issues that emerge within the Group, particularly in specific areas of business such as wholesale banking and international business

Key Responsibilities:

Define and Execute Group Wide Strategies (including International Business):

•             Perform strategic analysis and provide recommendations on situation, complication, and resulting action that should be taken by the Group

•             Analysis includes (but is not limited to) solving key questions related to group portfolio focus, growth strategy, customer strategy, pricing strategy, competitive strategy, distribution strategy, global footprint, market entry, M&A, technology investments, operating model, and workforce strategies

•             Expected to be autonomous in structuring a problem, and engaging in problem solving with senior stakeholders (RHB’s C-Suite and their direct reports)

•             He / She also needs to effectively direct teams in Group Strategy to complete discrete pieces of analysis that result in valuable insight, logical recommendations, quantified benefits, and assignable initiatives

•             Post analysis and recommendations, engage peers and C-Suite direct reports across the group to mobilise teams and execute initiatives

Define and Execute Value Creation Initiatives and Special Projects (within or across business units / functions):

•             Identify and define improvement initiatives to create value within, or across business units and functions. Value created should be categorised as revenue uplift, cost reduction, process / speed improvement, or capability development

•             In specific cases where a value creation initiative / business impeding issue is raised by the Group Management Committee (GMC) or the Board, the Head will form the necessary team to complete analysis, recommendations, and presentation back to the GMC / Board for approval. After which, the Head will engage the necessary C-Suite stakeholders and mobilise a team to execute on resulting initiatives (that have since been approved).

Board and Group Management Committee Engagement:

▪             As needed, oversees the development of GMC papers and Board papers on topics deemed relevant by the GCSO, GMC, or Board members.

▪             Expected to autonomously form a team to develop the paper and engage all necessary stakeholders on the topic (within, and outside of Group Strategy)

Competitor Benchmarking & Market Awareness:

▪             Expected to maintain an updated view on competitor strategies and RHB’s performance within the industry

▪             Where needed, he / she will direct a group strategy team to identify relevant trends, threats, opportunities, and competitor actions that need to be highlighted to the GMC

Investor Relations and Shareholder Value Reporting:

▪             Expected to maintain a clear view of the Group’s Strategic imperatives and how they translate to value for our shareholders

▪             Expected to provide assistance in communicating RHB’s group strategy and performance to rating agencies, regulatory, and other external parties (as requested / guided by Group Investor Relations)

Drive first principles problem solving, business case modelling, and oral/written communication capability development within Group Strategy

Serve as a mentor to project leaders and associates within Group Strategy, providing on-the-job training with regards to:

◦             First Principles Problem Solving (Hypothesis Driven Analysis)

◦             Business Case Modelling using MS-Excel and other tools

◦             Financial Modelling and Valuation techniques

◦             Effective written communication (PowerPoint, MS-Word, Outlook)

◦             Effective verbal communication

 

 

Requirements
Requirements:
Bachelor Degree - Undergraduate degree from a top global university (At least 2.1 degree or equivalent).
Master's Degree - Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from a top global university / business school will be a notable advantage.

- CFA / ACCA would be an added advantage


  • Minimum 8 years working experience with significant experience (at least 3 years) in reputed Strategy Consulting firms

Good understanding of the financial services industry preferred, demonstrated through past experience running impactful projects in the Financial Services sector and/or previous roles in the Financial Services sector

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Comfort with numbers and numerical analysis, demonstrated through past experience with business case modelling, financial modelling, or operational analysis
  • Exceptional project management skills (i.e. ability to organise, direct and lead multiple special projects)
  • Strong self-leadership and proven execution ability (“getting things done”)
  • Experience managing and coaching teams
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Powerpoint and Excel
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, especially with top-level senior executives  
  • Growth mindset with strong desire to learn and make an impact

Ability to operate data analytics tools such as Alteryx, Tableau and PowerBI are added advantages
